That is the question that Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library will put to Adrian Smith, the director of cultural services at Lambeth Council, at a public meeting at the library on Monday May 28th, from 6.15 to 7.45pm.

Why is this an issue?
The current proposals for the future of the library service in Lambeth involve a cut of near one half in money spent on Tate South Lambeth Library over the next two years (a cut that is much higher than the average for the whole library service). This will inevitably result in a reduction in the service provided – most likely, and immediately, through slashing the number of hours it is open. Its future as a small and under-resourced library must be in doubt – whatever the statements from Lambeth representatives that they do not intend to close any library.

Yet over the next two years – and beyond – the population living in the Vauxhall area is due to rise massively as the result of ongoing and planned investment in residential housing there, as part of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea development.

Does the proposal make sense?
Lambeth Council representatives, at the two public consultation meetings held at the library in April, claimed that they have consulted Greater London Authority figures for population in Vauxhall before setting the funds available for the library.

How up-to-date are Lambeth’s figures? Have they taken account of high-rise development in the future?

Big Potential effect on travel for us locally.  Anyone wanting to travel North -South is going to meet with a problem over access to the Bridges at various times. LOCALS ARE ADVISED TO TAKE UTILITY BILLS to SHOW THEIR LOCAL WHEREABOUTS and perhaps WHY they NEED to GET BACK.

Sunday 3rd June 2012 - River Thames Pageant, Chelsea to Tower    Bridge

There will be a large scale security operation in place in place from 7am with the closures and searches of the bridges. Large areas of Central London from Chelsea through to Tower Bridge will be affected during the day.

Bridges will have various closures in place and many will have viewing areas where the flotilla can be viewed by invited guests only:

1. Invited guests only: 

Albert, Lambeth, Westminster, Jubilee (Hungerford), Blackfriars, Millennium and Tower.

2. Bridges where pedestrians can cross but stopping to view the pageant is banned:

Battersea and Chelsea.

3. Bridges where traffic can cross (except 3pm to 5.50pm) during the pageant:

Vauxhall, Waterloo, Southwark and London.

It is expected that Central London will be busy with 1000 boats on the river and the opportunity to see this once in a lifetime event. A number of premises overlooking the river have already identified that they are holding events. They will need to consider access routes to their buildings. 

Businesses will need to consider their logistical support and areas such as staff travel. The main information will be available:

The weather looks good for the ASSA Residents Association Table Top Sale

This is the annual event where Local residents are able to put up tables outside their homes and sell their former treasures. It is a great chance to declutter and spring clean and is a great community recycling scheme.  Children can  spring clean their rooms of old toys and practice their entrepreneurial skills while earning money  to buy the next toy or give the money to their favourite charity or cause.

Anything apart from food can be up for sale or given away.   The idea is to recycle and keep items out of landfill for longer.

Residents are able  to sell on  the  4 streets that make up Association area and give away or sell their wares. Everyone else  is welcome to come in and pick up a bargain.

Where:  The streets of St Stephens, Albert Square, Tradescant Road and Wilkinson Street.

When:  11 am –  1 Pm.

Further info:  Local residents may set out their items on a table before the 11 am. Please be ready to sell FROM 11 am.   Items can be sold or given away.    Please spread the word amongst neighbours, friends and local schools and clubs and any other local networks.

There will be the opportunity to shape and create sound performances, explore a fictional Art Fair where you can barter, make and exchange; as well as contribute to a live press Newspaper which is being printed throughout the day.

Since then as a result of a madness/ planning restrictions and the lack of inspired thinking by successive governments / owners and developers the  site has remained entirely neglected. Only London can do so little with such a centrally located iconic jewel.

The last owner of Battersea had  money problems  and was unable to develop the site  and now Battersea Power Station is up for  open sale.

There were many rumours but now Chelsea Football Club  has confirmed that it has submitted an offer. Interestingly they say that the four iconic chimneys will stay and be restored and retained creating a unique back drop to a stadium for 60,000.  They also propose a town centre, shops affordable housing and offices.

Chelsea FC or its owners could be the first people in the last 30 years who have the resources to develop out and make this happen. IF CFC think to move to the South of the River they will be wonderfully welcome in that  they might be the last part in the Vauxhall Nine ELms ( VNEB) Jigsaw puzzle.

For those of us in South Lambeth / Vauxhall Stockwell area however it probably means not being able to drive over the bridges Northwards on match days?

Fulham – where CFC currently resides is paralysed by Chelsea Fans and traffic when a match is on. All the locals loathe the jams and parking problems.

ASSA held a very productive Day of cleaning up the area. As a result of various factors there was only 2 hours of work time available but volunteers managed to get out and clean and tidy, dig over , replant and compost many of the tree pits etc.

Much work was done by enthusiastic residents to the immediate outside areas and gardens of St Stephen’s church.

Pits were planted up  - and some exotic things were planted.

If you see any thirsty plants please take them out a bucket of water – and try to think of it on a weekly basis through this summer Drought !

There were very few volunteers in the event but Penny laid on a fabulous thank you post  party clear up for locals at her home. Thank you Penny.
