SATURDAY 1 JUNE – ALBERT SQUARE BIG LUNCH + BIG BAND PARTY!

Please do come along to meet your neighbours and have fun (in the sun?!) at the Albert Square Big Lunch followed by Big Party on Saturday 1 June. Organised by the ASSA Residents’ Association, the day will be a great opportunity to enhance our neighbourhood, create new connections and have some fun in the lovely relaxed surroundings of the Albert Square gardens.

Big Lunch

Starting from 1pm, the square will be open for local residents to come and bring food for themselves, their family and friends, and maybe to share with their neighbours. There will be fun and games for children in the safe surroundings of the garden. If you can come along beforehand to help set up marquees, bunting, blow up balloons, put up tables and organise games for children that will be a great help. We will provide some basic staples (like bread and salad) so please do let us know in advance if you are coming so that we can order these.

Big Band Party

After we’ve cleared away from lunch, we will be setting up in the evening for the Big Band Party. This will be a paid-for (but low-cost) event where the Lewisham Wind Band will perform hits from the classics and other great favourites with their usual gusto and verve. Bring along your picnic and refreshments, or buy a burger from our BBQ. Doors will open from 6pm, and the Band will perform from 7.30pm. The party will end at 10pm.

Tickets costs £5 or £3 for concessions (children are free) and can be bought in advance or on the door.

PORTUGUESE INFLUENCE IN THE EAST

Tuesday 4 June 2013, 7pm

Portuguese maritime explorations which led to connecting East-West trade from the late fifteenth century onwards had unexpected effects on the sociocultural fabric of the peoples they encountered. Effects on religion have been well recognised but other areas, such as language, music and dance, are less well known. This lecture concerns the intangible Lusitanian heritage.

Dr Shihan de Silva is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (University of London), a member of the UNESCO International Scientific Committee (Paris) and an elected Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society (Great Britain & Ireland). She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles in international journals, and has also written eight books in the fields of Portuguese Studies, Historical Linguistics, Ethnomusicology, African Diaspora Studies and Ethnography.

Local artist shows in West End

Local artist Nicholas Cope will be exhibiting his recent work at the ‘Gallery in the Crypt’, St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square, from Tuesday 30^th April to Sunday 26^th May, 2013. Since leaving the Royal College of Art this will be his first West End show. Called ‘The Art of the Ever True’ it comprises his current drawings, which are a culmination of 25 years’ enquiry into geometric symbolism and its relevance in our contemporary culture. Has your bike been packed away all winter? You’ll have the chance to get it oiled, patched up and ready for summer action with our on-site bike mechanic.

And we’ll clear away any unwanted goods when it’s over and take them to a local charity shop.

SAVE THE DATE – Trash or Treasure is back on 20 April

Our popular community recycling event, Trash or Treasure, is back! Save the date – Saturday 20 April from 10:30 am – 1 pm – and start collecting your disposables, sale items, crafts etc.

If you have any unwanted items – toys, clothes, unwanted DIY bits, old pots of still useful paint etc – get them together for sale/giveaway/exchange outside your door on the day.

You can keep the money made or give it to the charity of your choice.

ASSA is planning to host Dr Bike - free bike repairs – and other recycling events on the day.

Look out for the flyers and posters nearer the date, as well as more information here.

For those who haven’t done it before Trash or Treasure is a fun event and a really nice way of meeting the wider neighbourhood.

Friends of Tate South Library are hosting a talk by top local architects David Marks & Julia Barfield

David Marks and Julia Barfield have lived in Stockwell for more than 30 years and have run their architectural practice from Clapham Common for more than 20 years. Julia will talk about a selection of their projects, both local and global, including the London Eye, Kew Tree top Walkway, Michael Tippett School, Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice, Cambridge Mosque and Clapham Gateway
