SATURDAY 1 JUNE – ALBERT SQUARE BIG LUNCH + BIG BAND PARTY!

Please do come along to meet your neighbours and have fun (in the sun?!) at the Albert Square Big Lunch followed by Big Party on Saturday  1 June. Organised by the ASSA  Residents’ Association, the day will be a great opportunity to enhance our neighbourhood, create new connections and have some fun in the lovely relaxed surroundings of the Albert Square gardens.

Big Lunch

Starting from 1pm, the square will be open for local residents to come and bring food for themselves, their family and friends, and maybe to share with their neighbours. There will be fun and games for children in the safe surroundings of the garden. If you can come along beforehand to help set up marquees, bunting, blow up balloons, put up  tables and organise games for children that will be a great help. We will provide some basic staples (like bread and salad) so please do let us know in advance if you are coming so that we can order these.

Bring along your picnic and refreshments, or buy a burger from our BBQ. Doors will open from 6pm, and the Band will perform from 7.30pm. The party will end at 10pm.

Tickets costs £5 or £3 for concessions (children are free) and can be bought in advance or on the door.

PORTUGUESE INFLUENCE IN THE EAST

Tuesday 4 June 2013, 7pm

(doors open 6.30pm) at 180 South Lambeth Road, SW8 1QP

Portuguese maritime explorations which led to connecting East-West trade from the late fifteenth century onwards had unexpected effects on the sociocultural fabric of the peoples they encountered.  Effects on religion have been well recognised but other areas, such as language, music and dance, are less well known.   This lecture concerns the intangible Lusitanian heritage.

Dr Shihan de Silva is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (University of London), a member of the UNESCO International Scientific Committee (Paris) and an elected Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society (Great Britain & Ireland).  She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles in international journals, and has also written eight books in the fields of Portuguese Studies, Historical Linguistics, Ethnomusicology, African Diaspora Studies and Ethnography.

Lambeth Community Safety is pleased to present our new burglary reduction initiative  Lock It & Stop It. The project started in July 2012 and, working in conjunction with the Police and a team of specialist locksmiths, we are already making homes across the Borough more safe and secure.

This is a free service, prioritised according to need and to risk. We offer a free security assessment and (if appropriate) a free security upgrade.

  1. There is often easy access. The front door is often secured with just one (yale style) top lock, as most residents like to have easy access to their property and don’t wish to double lock doors. Unfortunately it is very easy for burglars to “slip” a single yale lock using a strip of plastic. Residents frequently under-estimate just how vulnerable their properties are.
  2. Homes are often unoccupied. Homes are often unoccupied during the day, making them more vulnerable to burglary.

To address these risks Lock It & Stop It is able to assess the property and offer security upgrades by way of:

    • Upgrading the main front door with mortise double locks (this is the single most important security initiative that will make a difference)
    • Fitting window fasteners
    • Supplying residents with property marking kits & warning stickers
    • Our expert locksmith will also provide general advice on crime prevention.

The Lock It & Stop It service is funded by Lambeth Council and is provided at no cost to eligible landlords and residents. However, it is a short term scheme with limited funding, so it is important to get in touch sooner rather than later.

If you would like to discuss Lock It & Stop It further, or if you would like to arrange a free assessment, then please use the contact details below: Tell them that you heard it though Neighbourhood Watch Manager

Jonesie is this beautiful cat and she has gone walkabout from the  Tradescant Road area about 24 hours ago.

She is very friendly and talkative and highly curious. The problem with curious cats is that they love to get into people’s cupboards, cellars and sheds and garages. So if you hear any miaowing or have recently had a garage or outbuilding open  and closed it up after doing some gardening or DIY  could you please check it?  It is entirely out of character for Jonesie to stay away from home for this length of time.

There is a reward too- so ask children to keep their eyes peeled (!)  but in any event if you have ANY information  or sightings please could you call  07958 314615 or email andreworange@gmail.com
